Domingos Jorge Velho was a landowner, owner of enslaved people and a bandeirante from São Paulo.
Widely recognized for the persecution of indigenous peoples, Domingos Jorge Velho was hired by Francisco Garcia D’Ávilla to exterminate entire tribes that inhabited the banks of the São Francisco River. His objective was to vacate the region so that he could set up a large livestock farm there.
He worked in the then provinces of Maranhão, Ceará, Pernambuco and Piauí, hunting indigenous people and / or promoting their forced catechization.
In addition to his role in indigenous extermination, Domingos Jorge Velho was an important figure in the struggles against Quilombo dos Palmares. Hired by the then governor of the State of Pernambuco, João da Cunha Souto Maior, he is considered by many to be responsible for the dissolution of the community. It is estimated that about 15 thousand quilombolas died in the confrontation.
